…and a New Chapter of Flour & Co Begins

It’s with some tears and a huge dose of nostalgia that I share with you our closure as of Tuesday, January 31, 2017. We’ve loved being a part of our Lower Nob Hill neighborhood and your daily lives over the past (almost) four years. You’ve made us soar and the years fly, by giving us your business, friendship, and support. Thank you so very much for being a part of this amazing journey.

flashback to pre-opening – oh how true this is…

On the other side of tears is some relief, excitement, and opportunity. With two little boys at home (8mos and 2yrs), my family calls. I’m so looking forward to spending more time with them and getting to know a work-life balance. This lovely city that we live in has been wonderful to us and we’ve seen so many successes and joys over the years, but it has also kicked the *flour* out of us a time or two. I’m ready for a little rest and variety beyond baked goods.

However, I’ve got to have some Flour & Co in my life. When one door closes another opens…this time in the form of an online Flour & Co shop. I’ll be doing it on the side (must get job), but I can’t wait to continue spreading the love. Our online shop will feature our Nutty Granola to start. If you haven’t had it, it’s a breakout star at the bakery, one that has depth, lots of nuts, and hugs the line of salty over sweet. Who knows…maybe you’ll see it in local stores too. We’ll see just how many doors open.

I also look forward to getting back into recipe testing, eating other people’s baked goods, and all of the baking-related things that got me here in the first place. I plan to blog about it once I take a little break, so follow our blog for the latest.

I, and my wonderful team, send great big hugs and thanks to all of you. We hope to continue the friendships that have been forged by Flour & Co even after this chapter ends.

Best wishes,

Emily Day

The Bakery Life: Countdown to Thanksgiving

Happy November!  We’ve been getting in to the holiday spirit via smells of baking pumpkin, apples, and butternut squash.  The weather helps too with it dipping into the blustery 50’s at night!

If you want to leave dessert to us, we highly suggest that you pre-order your goodies for pick up the two days before Thanksgiving.  The earlier the better!  While we plan to have desserts on hand these two days for last minute grabs, they may go quickly.

If you plan on doing it all yourself, we can help with frozen bake-at-home helpers, such as pie shells, pie dough, and unbaked buttermilk biscuits.  Shhhh…we won’t tell.

Here’s our lineup:

The Bakery Life: Mother’s Day and Movemeant (Raising Dough) at Flour & Co

Remember celebrating May Day when you were a kid?  My sister and I would put together little care packages of flowers and goodies for our neighbors.  We’d hang them on their front door knob, ring the door bell, and run like heck so they wouldn’t see us.  What fun!  Call it inspiration for some grown up fun tomorrow.  Pack up a goodie box and/or flowers and drop it on your coworker or teacher’s desk when they aren’t looking.  Make sure to accompany it with “happy May Day!”

May also equals Mother’s Day!  Moms are deserving of some special treatment on May 10th (well, every day really), and we’re here to help with the sweets portion.  Here’s what we’ve got planned for the weekend:

~ Cherry Pie

~ Peach Blackberry Crostata

~ Mini Strawberry Rhubarb Crostata

~ Triple Chocolate Caramel Brownies (heart shaped)

~ Mini Chocolate Bundt Cakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

~ Heart Shortbread Cookies (in cute packages)

While we will have treats available for walk-ins, be sure to get Mom the treat of her choice by reserving ahead of time.  We’re taking orders now for pick up on Mother’s Day (or whenever you are celebrating with her).  Call (415-992-7620), email (info@flourandco.com) or stop in to place an order.

Our Raising Dough organization for May is Movemeant, an organization addressing our society’s issue with negative body image.  Besides dropping change in our donation box throughout the month, you can also get involved in their upcoming Dare to Bare festival on May 16th at the Marina Green from 11am to 4pm.  What a great way to get moving towards a positive body image!

One pager movemeantLastly, a quick update on our new Berkeley Bakery.  We’re still working on getting building permits from the City of Berkeley.  It’s a process that always takes time and time…and more time.  We’re crossing our fingers that we’ll have them in June!  Then the fun really begins.  More soon…

With love,

The Bakery Life: Valentine’s Day at Flour & Co

February often gets the short end of the stick and gives hearts a bad wrap.  It’s the dead of winter (works the heart harder), the Superbowl (can be a heartbreaker), Hallmark’s hallmark month (the heart cannot be bought), and the month of red roses (the heart doesn’t work well under pressure).

We think February (and hearts) deserves a sweet spin.  And, everyone deserves some genuine sweetness on Valentine’s Day.  No labels, pressure, or schemes included.

Join us on Friday, February 13th for some good old-fashioned cookie decorating.  Eat it yourself or give it to a friend in need of some heart.  We’ll provide the heart-shaped cookie and frosting (on us), you provide the creative juices.  While supplies last.

Sweets for our sweets…available now through February 28.  Pre-order by February 12th for pick up on Valentine’s Day.

The Bakery Life: Thanksgiving 2014 at Flour & Co

Wow!  It’s hard to believe we’re about to embark on our 2nd Thanksgiving at Flour & Co.  We feel a bit more prepared this year, a little less tired, and as always, we are so looking forward to the holiday season.  Thanksgiving is my personal favorite.  What’s better than a day filled with family, friends, feasts, and honoring or giving thanks to the people and things in our lives.  There’s so much to be thankful for!

We’re warming up our ovens for an action-packed season!  But, if you still have your heart set on baking at home, our freezer will be packed with bake-at-home helpers, such as pie shells, pie dough, and unbaked buttermilk biscuits too.

For homemade, baked desserts, here’s what we’ve got in store for you:

November ‘Raising Dough’:

We have so much to be thankful for, but not every one is as fortunate.  Our Raising Dough charity for November is the SF Food Bank.  We want to help put food on peoples’ tables this Thanksgiving.  Bring a can of food for our collection or drop your loose change in our collection box when you come in to place your order, or pick up, or get your daily coffee.  Volunteer with us!  November 11, 6-8pm.  Email info@flourandco.com if you’d like to join! We thank you for anything that you can do to help!

Thanksgiving & Holiday Events:

We’ve got some fun things planned the holidays to get into the spirit!  Participation in these events requires an RSVP and space is limited.

Friday, December 5, 6:30pm-8pm –  Holiday Cookie Decorating.    Come hang out with us!  You’ll get 6 freshly baked sugar cut out cookies to decorate and take home.  We’ll provide all of the decorating supplies, as well as some refreshments (bubbly included) and snacks.  Christmas music will be supplied as well! All you need to bring is a festive spirit and your favorite Christmas cookie recipe to share with the group.  (This is an adult event with a limit of 16 people; RSVP required; $35 per person)

Saturday, December 6, 4pm-5pm – Kids Holiday Cookie Decorating.  Each child will get 4 freshly baked sugar cut out cookies to decorate and take home.  We’ll provide all of the decorating supplies, as well as cider and a snack for each child.  An adult must be present for each child or group of children.  (This is a kids event with a limit of 8 kids; RSVP required; $15 per child).

Monday & Tuesday, December 23 & 24 – Cookies for Santa!  We know how busy it gets as Christmas approaches, so let us prepare Santa’s cookies.  Only thing left for you to do: Arrange them on a pretty plate and place in Santa’s favorite spot.  The box will include 6 mini cookies: sugar cutout, chocolate peanut butter sandwich, and ginger molasses.  (Santa’s cookies must be pre-ordered by December 21; $8.50)

Thanksgiving & Holiday Gift Baskets – we have a number of pretty holiday gift packs that are prefect for hostess gifts, corporate gifts, teacher treats, friends and family.   We can customize them too.  Just ask, reserve ahead, and we’ll have them ready for pick up at your convenience!

That’s all we’ve got for now.  Happy November!!

Raising Dough: Flour & Co and the SF Food Bank

In October, we featured a neighborhood favorite on our community board, Project Open Hand.  Thanks to you, we raised $96.  We’ll be donating a total of $192 with our matching.  We also had a great time volunteering one evening in their prep kitchen.  We had a group of 7 including Flour & Co team members and guests.  Thanks to everyone who supported our cause in one way or another.  We couldn’t do it without your help!

November marks the beginning of the holiday season, starting with Thanksgiving.  We thought it appropriate to do a can drive and support the SF Food Bank for the month.  We’ve got a pail ready for your donations, so drop by non-perishable foods if you’d like to join in.  We’ll be dropping the goods off just before Thanksgiving.  We’ll also be collecting change in our community board box.  Finally, we’ll be volunteering as a group on Tuesday, November 11th from 6pm – 8pm.  We have 10 spots available and you are welcome to join us.  Just email Emily at info@flourandco.com to inquire about participating.

We’re excited to be making this holiday season something special for those who aren’t as fortunate.  Thank you for joining us!

The Bakery Life: Guess What’s Baking in the Oven??!

November 1, 2014, will mark one year, six months, and twenty four days from the birthday of my first baby, Flour & Co.  Oh, how fast they grow.  And, how easy it is to forget the sleepless nights, the sacrifices, and the bad days.  You just have to look at the creation in front of you, the people on the inside and the outside who make it so rewarding, and unconditional love masks the rest.  Little did I know that Flour & Co would be a dress rehearsal for another very real life event.

Well, this other, even more profound, life event is just 2 weeks away.  November 1, 2014, also marks the due date of our real life baby, Baby (Boy) Day.  It’s funny that a year and a half ago, the suggestion of having a baby on top of the bakery would have been laughable (or cryable depending on the day).  However, as 2013 progressed and my mind and body got used to the emotions and work involved in owning a bakery, my husband and I agreed that having a baby just seemed like the perfect next step.  That “momnesia” that everyone talks about must have done its magic (on both of us).

37 weeks pregnant
38 weeks pregnant; +/- 2 weeks to game day

Needless to say, we are beyond excited to meet our little guy in a couple weeks (give or take).  We’re also looking forward to introducing him to our family, friends, and the neighborhood.  I’ve got a wonderful team who is ready to pick up my slack when the big day hits, and have already started in preparation.  My perspective will shift for a month or two as we come in for breakfast each day, as opposed to serving breakfast behind the counter.  This perspective shift will also allow me to work on other parts of the business that I’m not able to accomplish while behind the counter (a struggle that I’ve felt since we opened).  Most of all, we look forward to getting to know and spending significant time with our new baby.  We’ve waited a long time for this and don’t want to miss a moment!

Throughout the last nine months, everyone has been so supportive and shown tremendous care and concern.  It’s fun to know that our baby will have so many friends right off the bat.  We’ve got a lot of speculation floating around as to his birth date and weight, so we thought it would be fun to have people drop their guesses at the bakery.  We’ll be sure to announce the person who is closest when he reveals himself, as well have a little something special for having their finger on his pulse.

With my schedule dwindling down already, you may see me less over the next two weeks, but don’t fret.  You will be some of the first to know when he makes his way into this world.  We have a special treat planned to share, in his honor, when he is born.  We can’t wait to share the news with you!
